ON THE MOVE

Jules de Balincourt is coming up

Born in Paris and raised in California, artist Jules de Balincourt moved to New York in 2000, to get his art career started at the ripe old age of 27. As he told Art + Auctionrecently, the transition was a rude awakening: “I was seeing 24-year-olds having solo shows and thought, ‘Wow, did I already miss my opportunity?’ I got here, and the art world seemed liked this impenetrable fortress.” Oh, but all you late bloomers out there take heart—a decade later (with time spent working as an art handler, founding performing-arts venue Starr Space in Bushwick, and earning an MFA from Hunter, among other things), the talented Balincourt is a fast-rising art star, who currently has a retrospective at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo. Tonight is the opening party for his solo show Premonitions, which includes more than 15 new paintings—done in his playful, handmade style—that explore everything from cyberspace to Obama’s America.
