Sparrows

Dir. William Beaudine (1926). This extraordinary silent film, unlike any other Mary Pickford vehicle, becomes something like a horror movie as we breathlessly follow little Mary's attempts to save a gaggle of pathetic abused children who are trapped like slaves on a baby farm deep in a gator-filled swamp in a Louisiana bayou, protecting them from a sadistic overseer. The somewhat Dickensian story gets a spookily Germanic stylistic treatment.
