Sunrise

Dir. F.W. Murnau (1927). Silent cinema reaches its acme with movement of Murnau’s camera through the vaporous fields of an invented America. Superimpositions and dissolves achieve an almost mystical state of deliquescence. Light not only flows but melts. Thirty years after its release, Cahiers du Cinema declared Sunrise “the single greatest masterwork in the history of cinema.” It’s an assertion as reckless, romantic, and extravagant as the movie itself.
Fridays-Sundays, 1:10, 3:20, 5:30, 7:40 & 9:50 p.m.; Mondays-Thursdays, 1:10, 3:20, 5:30, 7:40 & 9:50 p.m. Starts: April 2. Continues through April 8, 2010
