THE BARD GOES SHOPPING

A Hamlet for our consumer culture

Something is hygienic in Denmark—and fully climate-controlled, and close to a number of retail and dining outlets. Hamlet has often been staged in odd locales, but few as unlike Elsinore as the World Financial Center, which hosts New York Classical Theatre's production of Shakespeare's tragedy. Director Stephen Burdman, of New York Classical Theatre, will direct a production that ranges across more than three-and-a-half of the center's indoor acres. Will Polonius declare "Neither a borrower nor a lender be" in front of Bank of America? Or will Hamlet utter "Rich gifts wax poor" amid a jewelry store's offerings? And where to stage the closet scene? Ann Taylor? At least the melancholy Dane can brighten his day with a scoop of Ciao Bella.
