“When you see a gruesome picture over and over again, it doesn’t really have any effect,” said Andy Warhol about his series of paintings in the early ‘60s that dealt with violent death—by suicides, car crashes, assassinations, and executions. Warhol was particularly speaking of his silkscreen art piece titled Orange Disaster #5, which is now part of the Guggenheim Museum’s new exhibition Haunted: Contemporary Photography/Video/Performance, an examination of how contemporary photography and video appear to be haunted by the past via dated or no-longer-used techniques and subject matter. The show features more than 100 works, many of them recent acquisitions that have never been shown at the museum before, by about 60 artists, including Jeff Wall, Roni Horn, Sophie Calle, Cindy Sherman, and Robert Rauschenberg, as well as younger artists who look to the past for inspiration. It’s up to the viewer to do a double take to see what ghosts actually lurk beneath the surface.
