A bunch of bored, educated young people in their twenties and thirties working in a café sounds like it could be a new movie by Kevin Smith. But these disaffected baristas aren’t at Starbucks. They belong to acclaimed Japanese playwright Toshiki Okada’s latest work Enjoy, set at a manga café, where customers pay for time to read Japanese comic books, play video games, watch television, use the Internet, even shower. Presented by the Obie-winning Play Company and billed as a 21st-century comedy of manners, the story follows the romantic happenings of the employees whose hopes for a brighter future are dubious at best due to continuing economic instability—something recent American college grads can certainly relate to. Dan Rothenberg of the Pig Iron Theatre Company directs.
