There'll be no plucky Dickensian pickpockets in want of more porridge here (hopefully), but there will be plenty of celluloid equivalents in need of your love and affection. At the seventh biennial Orphan Film Symposium, it is the more than 80 collected works of independent production that have been abandoned or neglected over the years. The event is hosted by NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and features four days of screening rare archival materials that range from being less than a year old to more than a hundred years old. Tonight, be sure to catch "Rough, Unpolished, but Alive" at 8, with footage of Andy Warhol's Up-Tight concerts, home movies of Velvet Underground rehearsals, and the newly restored 1959 documentary The Cry of Jazz. Some other highlights include a showing of Orson Welles's Sketchbook Series on Thursday morning and a discussion on some recently excavated work by L.A. punk filmmaker Chris Langdon this afternoon at 2:15.
