A festival explores what's new in African cinema
Celebrating 50 years of African independence from colonial rule, the 17th annual New York African Film Festival returns, starting April 7, with a dozen feature films and a shorts program. With the fast-approaching World Cup in South Africa, our pick for today is Between the Cup and the Election, a documentary on the Congolese team that competed in the 1974 World Cup, the first sub-Saharan soccer team to do so. Also today is Eliane de Latour's Beyond the Ocean, about two men from the Ivory Coast who seek their fortunes in Europe; King Ampaw's No Time to Die, about changes in African funeral traditions; and Ladji Diakité and Adama Drabo's The Power of the Poor, about a gang of headhunters who decapitate an albino because they believe the head will bring them power and wealth. The filmmakers will make appearances at most screenings.
