TAKE ME OUT TO THE THEATER

Denzel Washington comes to Broadway in Fences

Perhaps the President and the Mrs. will consider another New York date night when this August Wilson play opens on Broadway. If Fences is perhaps less signal a Wilson work than Joe Turner's Come and Gone, which occasioned the first couple's earlier theatrical sojourn, this play about a former Negro League baseball player still hits a narratival home run. While the leader of the free world can delight in Wilson's lyrical cadences and acute characterological observations, his spouse can enjoy the ample charms of heavy-hitter Denzel Washington. Viola Davis, Chris Chalk, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Russell Hornsby, and Mykelti Williamson round out the batting lineup.
Wednesdays, Saturdays, 2 p.m.; Wednesdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 3 p.m.; Tuesdays, 7 p.m., 2010
