Perhaps the President and the Mrs. will consider another New York date night when this August Wilson play opens on Broadway. If Fences is perhaps less signal a Wilson work than Joe Turner's Come and Gone, which occasioned the first couple's earlier theatrical sojourn, this play about a former Negro League baseball player still hits a narratival home run. While the leader of the free world can delight in Wilson's lyrical cadences and acute characterological observations, his spouse can enjoy the ample charms of heavy-hitter Denzel Washington. Viola Davis, Chris Chalk, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Russell Hornsby, and Mykelti Williamson round out the batting lineup.
