Dir. Vera Belmont (1997). An exuberant entertainment on a grand scale, this is the bawdy account of the career of Mademoiselle Duparc, the 17th century charmer who went from street urchin to whore to courtesan and wound up as a famous theatrical tragedienne known as Marquise. Belmont keeps the elaborate production lively and Sophie Marceau plays the brazen beauty with abandon. Most of the big name geniuses of the period turn up—Moliere, Racine, Lully. the longish running time allows Marquise to make out with most of the large cast. Best performance is from Patrick Tinsit, subtle and poignant as the lady's portly husband.
