Surprise Me Mr. Davis

An anything-goes philosophy birthed Surprise Me Mr. Davis, a suit-wearing electrofolk quintet (from members of the Slip and ThaMuseMeant) that builds robust Arcade Fire drama from haunting seesaw synths and lead singer Nathan Moore's empathic call to arms. Though their name sounds like a Jimmy Stewart vehicle from the '40s, tunes have a philosophical bent—Moore has claimed that he wants to transport audiences to "before they were born." (He has also been arrested for marijuana possession.) As for proving that musical reincarnation exists, the band's sweeping "Summer of My Fall" is sublime. With Annie & the Beekeepers.
