THE DAY THE MUSIC LIVED

Mp3s take a hike!

Though we may have said good-bye to the city's last large-scale record store when the Virgin Megastore shuttered last summer, dozens of indie record shops continue to soldier on, somehow. To bring attention (and some much-needed revenue) to these survivors across the country, two years ago Metallica kicked off the inaugural Record Store Day at San Francisco Bay area's Rasputin Music, and it is now celebrated the third Saturday of every April with in-store performances, giveaways, and limited-edition records (for instance, Merge is offering a 7-inch autographed picture disc by Superchunk). Today, at Other Music (15 East 4th Street, 212-477-8150), Sal Principato from Liquid Liquid and Scott Devendorf from the National will be on DJ duty throughout the day while the Pains of Being Pure at Heart and the Drums will play sets in the evening. Cymbals Eat Guitars and Walter Schreifels will be at Generation Records (210 Thompson Street, 212-254-1100).
