If you think you can truly tell the difference between male and female writing, perhaps it's time to take The Diversity Test: Gender and Literature in Translation, a discussion on the prejudices that female authors continue to face and why they are so often excluded from the literary canon, with novelist and Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Lorraine Adams, Orange Prize winner Andrea Levy, Israeli novelist Alex Epstein, and National Book Award winner Norman Rush. The event kicks off day one of the PEN World Voices Festival, which brings together 150 distinguished international authors, including Patti Smith, Toni Morrison, Yiyun Li, A.M. Homes, and Natalie Merchant (who'll be singing in the PEN Cabaret), for a whirlwind week of performances and discussions at various venues—many of them free! Events of note include "Weather Report: What Can We Do?," a talk on climate change, and "Adaptation: From Page to Screen," on the art of translating fiction to film, with Francine Prose and Richard Price, among others (both talks will be on April 29).
Mon., April 26, 7 p.m., 2010
