Meet John Doe

Dir. Frank Capra (1941). Columnist Barbara Stanwyck invents a cynical stunt newspaper story about a tramp intent on killing himself to protest the state of the world and Gary Cooper turns up to fill the role of puppet social reformer. Beautifully shot and well-acted, this hollow hokum from bogus liberal Capra was plastered with several variant endings, none of them convincing.
