"The Church is still playing rock and roll hand-to-mouth," noted critic Todd Totale last June on influential Chicago music blog Glorious Noise. He was referring to how the Canberra, Australia, post-punkers' van had just broken down en route to the House of Blues—and, with some incredulity, the cruel notion that the prominent rock band still has to travel by van 30 years into their career. This can't be the Remote Luxury once envisioned. But regardless of trains, plains, or stupid faulty axles, the Church still serve up shows with fervor; original members Steve Kilbey (vocals, bass), Marty Wilson-Piper (guitar), and Peter Koppes (guitar) are joined now by Tim Powles on drums, and still have the loose-limbed ferocity that has propelled them since their debut Of Skins and Heart (1981). For this Big 3-0 anniversary show, they'll go acoustic, but not softened.
