The Tarnished Angels

Dir. Douglas Sirk (1958). The closest that cultivated emigré Sirk would come to making a European art film at Universal studios is a svelte adaptation of William Faulkner’s novel of itinerant stunt fliers. The movie is iconic, morbid, and stocked with symbols—it’s a shadowy dans macabre rather than a gaudy mambo of desire.
