Is there such a thing as 2010 hard bop? "This One's for Bob" from the new Due Reverence says yes. But the skilled tenor player likes to mess with orthodoxy too, so the track has a freewheeling feel. That kind of confluence is what gives Bowen's music so much scope; it seems like he's toeing the line even when he's leaping off a cliff. Anyone who's caught him tearing it up with Orrin Evans will know he's only an academic during the daylight hours.
