The pianist jumps back on the homage train (his '97 nod to Bud Powell was superb) to scrutinize the way his introspective forebear accomplished all that magic a half century ago. Even though he's hedging his bets by aligning himself with Evans's associates, Paul Motian and Eddie Gomez, Corea isn't one to ape an icon's style. If he chooses to explore key tunes such as "Waltz for Debby" or "Gloria's Step," there will be plenty of Chick on display—which means plenty of invention, too.
