HALVORSON’S HOUSE

A BK upstart grinds her ax

While most young Brooklyn musicians tend to follow the current surging swell of three chords, caustic electro blips, and pants so tight and ill-fitting you can hear them chafe, guitarist-composer Mary Halvorson takes an insightful route; her experimental work for ensemble is well versed in post-bop jazz and fluidic chamber music. This gig at perennially intriguing the Kitchen celebrates the debut LP of Saturn Sings with her latest project, the Mary Halvorson Quintet. They’ll be joined by Kevin Shea of local improv noisists Talibam!; he promises “experimental weirditude” with almost certain modesty.
Thu., May 6, 8 p.m.; Fri., May 7, 8 p.m., 2010
