ONE QUESTION

How many songs will Jeff Mangum do?

Tickets to this benefit to help raise money for New Zealand lo-fi, proto-twee art-punker Chris Knox were $75 and still sold out in under 15 minutes. It says a lot about the need to help a dude who requires serious rehabilitation after a series of strokes—and you can still do your part by purchasing the benefit album at chrisknox.co.nz. But it says even more about the caliber of indie-rock royalty whose hearts he has touched with his timeless, ramshackle art-pop. Brooklyn Vegan has no qualms about calling this “the Jeff Mangum show” since the reclusive Neutral Milk Hotel frontman will be showing up to perform a small acoustic set. But the other performers are a virtual who’s who: the clearly Knox-inspired Yo La Tengo, TV on the Radio’s Kyp Malone, Magnetic FieldsClaudia Gonson, Portastatic, and his kiwi contemporaries the Clean. But the main reason this may be the best show of the year is the rules according to booker Ben Goldberg: “No filming will be allowed at the event. . . . Having to fight for a view of the performers past somebody getting a shitty photo on their shitty RAZR phone should not be part of the equation.” Amen and get well.
