Just as the Metropolitan Museum of Art is paying tribute to fashionable women from the past and present, the Museum of Modern Art is also celebrating those with XX chromosomes with Pictures by Women: A History of Modern Photography. The exhibition, featuring more than 200 works by 120 artists, reveals the essence of womanhood with works by Diane Arbus, Tina Modotti, Cindy Sherman, and Carrie Mae Weems, as well as pictures, collages, videos, and photography-based installations by Yoko Ono, Lorna Simpson, and Kiki Smith. The images depict everything from domestic life (American photographer Gertrude Käsebier’s 1899 elegant black-and-white photograph Blessed Art Thou Among Women of a young girl in a school uniform alongside her mother in a nightgown) to domestic violence (Nan Goldin’s Nan One Month After Being Battered, a 1984 self-portrait of her bruised and bloodied face after her boyfriend beat her up)—all powerful examples of the female experience.
