A class to indulge your inner Gilligan
It’s a shame to live in New York and not enjoy the water, even if it’s only catching the sunset from an outside table at a waterfront restaurant. But if you want a more direct experience, you can learn to sail at SailNY. A nonprofit group dedicated to bringing affordable, public-access sailing to New Yorkers since 1996, they offer a full program of training and racing in addition to recreational sailing with a fleet that includes five 27-foot Solings, three cruisers, and two safety boats. For beginners, “your passage into the world of sailing”—as their website promises—is the Basic Keelboat course, which happens over two consecutive Sundays (9:45 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and takes its lead from US Sailing’s Basic Keelboat. The cost is $325 (not bad, at about $20 an hour). The Keelboat course is the prerequisite for other classes, including “Coastal Cruising” and even a “Skipper Qualification Clinic.” (Requests for information on “three-hour tours” will be met with rolling eyes.)
