DDR/DDR

Dir. Amie Siegel (2008). Originally shown as an installation, Amie Siegel’s DDR/DDR leisurely excavation of the perfect 1984 state—one half of the population spied on the other—is an astute, precise, self-regarding piece of work. (Frequently on camera, the filmmaker interviews the natives and occasionally puts herself on the couch as well.) A dutiful analyst, Siegel searched hundreds of hours of “anonymized” tapes in search of anomalies—even discovering a quasi-underground movie produced by a bored spy.
