After a tumultuous childhood in New Orleans’ Magnolia projects, and itinerant periods in Detroit, New York, and Atlanta, rapper Jay Electronica has found his true home in Baltimore and his gift for flowing over epic, unexpected film scores; “Act 1,” his lo-fi rap over Jon Brion’s suites for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, made him one of the biggest indie hip-hop sensations of ’08, and his mixtape Attack of the Clones was similar far-reaching fare. With a full LP yet to be released, but a cadre of singles and tapes in his arsenal, his celluloid bent has paid off; Jay was recently signed to Control FreaQ Records, and early output suggests a similar, more figuratively naked wanderlust than his label boss, Erykah Badu. Part of the Summerstage Festival.
