Out in Southwest Michigan, Jeff Daniels is probably best known for the Purple Rose, the nonprofit theater he founded in the sleepy farm town of Chelsea in 1991 (named after his dashing turn in Woody Allen's The Purple Rose of Cairo). The easygoing charm at the center of his acting is the driver behind the Rose, too, and that same aw shucks nature informs Daniels' folky, very Midwestern music. Grandfather's Hat, his 2006 studio album, featured pleasant, homey selections such as "Detroit Train" and "Lifelong Tiger Fan Blues." And generally, it's all very listenable, like napping intermittently as someone tunes in "A Prairie Home Companion" on a faraway radio.
