Who made John Waters?

When writer Augusten Burroughs read Role Models, John Waters's new memoir about the people who inspired him, he said: "How did somebody from a quiet Baltimore neighborhood grow up to become the outlandish, brilliant, and insane John Waters? Two words: Johnny Mathis." Yes, the traditional crooner of standards is one of the personalities Waters says made him the original that he is; in Role Models, Waters also nods to Tennessee Williams, Saint Catherine of Siena, and Esther Martin, owner of the "scariest" bar in Baltimore. Tonight, "LIVE from the NYPL" 's Paul Holdengräber chats with the king of gross-out filmmaking to discuss all the folks who inspired him to give poop-eating the celluloid treatment.
