The Merchant of Venice

A sad tale's best for winter, as all bard aficionados know, but what Shakespeare play best serves a summer's evening? This season, the Public Theater's Shakespeare in the Park will give the Delacorte stage over to the romance of The Winter's Tale (directed by Michael Greif) running in repertory with the still-very-much-a-problem play, The Merchant of Venice (directed by Daniel Sullivan). Much of the excellent cast has roles in both plays: Linda Emond, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, and Jesse L. Martin play the lead roles in The Winter's Tale, while the extraordinary Al Pacino will star as the usurious Shylock in Merchant.
