CRESCENT KING

An r&b icon transports Prospect Park to NOLA

Celebrate Brooklyn Festival? Yeah, we'd say that's a step up from "Working in the Coalmine." Allen Toussaint, the longtime mayor of New Orleans r&b, scored just one of many mainstream victories recently with The River in Reverse, his 2006 collab album with Elvis Costello that received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album. It was a scant surprise for his remarkably fervid fan base, who've followed the singer-pianist since his origins: penning hits for NOLA soulsters Art and Aaron Neville, Ernie K-Doe, the Showmen, and more in the '60s, and producing his own records and LaBelle's smash Nightbirds in the '70s. And his feet keep stompin'. With Davell Crawford.
