He Guggenheim'd his way into a study of Puerto Rican street music, and returned with Esta Plena, one of last year's fiercest jazz discs. The three-percussionist team that bolstered the music's rhythmic agenda also shored up the saxophonist's lyrical frenzy, so everything seemed agitated yet attractive. When Zenon's alto darts through the drummers, his quartet follows suit, and their collective punch can be as infectious as their sizable esprit, especially in a cozy club setting.
