SCANDINAVIANS DO IT SUBTLER

Two folk acts, zero amnesty

A tenuous peace binds Norway and Sweden, but it can be shattered at any moment, and we know this from their coffee mugs. Indeed, these neighbors' simmering rivalry is apparent in their popular novelty offerings of porcelain cups with handles inside the bowl, emblazoned on the grip-less exterior with "Norwegian coffee cup" (in Sweden, naturally) and "Swedish coffee cup" (in Norway). No, honestly, this is a thing—it's a passive-aggressive staple of their international relations. So let's hope that woozy lo-fi folk rockers Junip (of Gothenberg, Sweden, and featuring José González) and wry electro-cabaret singer-songwriter Hanne Hukkelberg(of Kongsberg, Norway) leave this at the Delancey curb and act amiably tonight. Hukkelberg's latest EP, Blood From a Stone, suggests she has the eclectic, Tori Amos–unspooled charms to act graciously.
