The Naked Dawn

Dir. Edgar G. Ulmer (1955). One of Ulmer’s more elaborate cheapsters—in color!—from a script by blacklisted writer Julian Zimet, this faux Mexican, folk Western morality play is at once corny and avant and, as always with Ulmer, filled with visual ideas. It’s hard to know if Arthur Kennedy is great or terrible as the bandito anti-hero but, whichever it is, it’s something.
