PRESIDENT OF OZ

Ease on down to Henry Street

Do pay attention to the man behind the curtain when it's President Obama. For The Whiz: Obamaland, choreographer Nicholas Leichter has updated The Wiz as a fantasy for the Obama era. Composer Monstah Black, who has described his own work as "Fela Kuti meets Sylvester," was commissioned to create the score, mixing original funk, contemporary hip-hop, and remixed elements of the 1975 Broadway musical that first re-imagined The Wizard of Oz in an African-American context. For the post-Bush Great Recession retelling, Bam's totally the hope-inducing Whiz, but being a bachelor in the original, we're stumped on what role Michelle will play. How hot would she be as the Wicked Witch of the West?
Wednesdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m. Starts: June 16. Continues through June 19, 2010
