The Bluebird

Dir. Maurice Tourneur (1918). Anticipating The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari by a year in its pop expressionism and deliberately anachronistic style, The Bluebird might be subtitled “A Pageant of Living Pictures’’ particularly as much of it concerns the animation of household objects. In a concession to naturalism, Tourneur allows his relaxed child performers to basically groove on the hallucinated doings around them.
