World Team Tennis really kicked off in 1984 when Billie Jean King became part owner and commissioner. Now in its 35th season, the WTT is a professional league with a twist: Men and women play equally on coed teams, all matches are played on multicolored courts, and—welcome to the 21st century!—there’s instant replay. From July 5 to 19, you can catch WTT competition at Randalls Island’s fabulous sports complex as our hometown NY Sportimes meet seven visiting teams in the league. While you root the home team on, you can catch such tennis luminaries as John McEnroe (Springfield Lasers), Andy Roddick (Philadelphia Freedoms), and Serena Williams (Washington Kastles). Try today’s match between the Sportimes and the Boston Lobsters, featuring local NY star James Blake.
