Chicago's blue-ribbon instrumental rockers were totally engrossing on last year's Beacons Of Ancestorship; its simple arpeggios slowly came to a rolling boil amidst rhythmically precise blasts of otherwise nonsensical noise and the same smoky ambiance that has ensured drummer John McEntire's career as a producer. But it was a 2006 album of covers with underground folk artist Bonnie "Prince" Billy that proved their real point: This is what every other instrumentally half-assed singer-songwriter on the planet could be doing if they got it together, too.
