NATURE LOVER

Discover American artist Charles Burchfield

"It's surprising how many really smart people in the art world don't know his work at all," sculptor Robert Gober told The New York Timesabout the watercolor landscape artist Charles Burchfield, whose new retrospective Gober has curated. Part of the American Scene movement of the 1930s, Burchfield focused on his immediate surroundings in Upstate New York, from his garden to a forest at dusk, painting personal works that display his strong, abiding love of nature (he was known for enjoying to paint while standing in a swamp). Today, you can prove you're in the know by trekking over to the Whitney, where the Burchfield exhibit Heat Waves in a Swamp will bring you up to speed with 100 major watercolors, drawings, oils on canvas, sketches, and journals.
