Zs

An antidote to the increasing adultness of Bang On A Can's still-lovely marathon (taking place tomorrow afternoon), Brooklyn's Zs take the best of serious musical discipline and explode it into a space that is radical, uncompromising, and obliterating, though still undeniably relating back to the concert hall. Performing in a circle, the quartet's music is jagged and joyous, filled with machine-like rhythmic precision, saxophonist Sam Hillmer's extended techniques, and a noisy and focused group mentality that overwhelms all rational analysis. Their latest, New Slaves, might prove a milestone in the avant-noise tradition. With David Linton.
