AFRICAN PRIDE

The Roots host a World Cup wrap party

OK, America’s out of the World Cup, Britain’s out of the World Cup . . . but screaming with a bunch of strangers never stops being fun! Celebrate the last day in four years that you’ll remotely care about soccer with a cross-Brooklyn party. First, watch the final game for free under the Manhattan Bridge, then take a short F-train ride from DUMBO to Park Slope for Celebrate Brooklyn’s Okayafrica, an all-star program of music honoring the first time the tournament has ever been played in Africa. As the hosts for the night, the Rootswill headline—ever since moving from Illadelph to Studio 6B, they’ve been New York’s official party band—and will be tirelessly jamming throughout the day with their amazing, hand-picked stable of openers. Rapper Talib Kweli will be in attendance, fresh off his new album, along with Sierra Leone dancehall-rap superstars (turned New York-superstars-to-be) Bajah + The Dry Eye Crew. The day is rounded out by Ghana-born, Brooklyn-residing MC Blitz The Ambassador, a perfect mix of classic KRS and infectious Afrobeat. And don’t miss the afternoon kickoff by Fela! star Sahr Ngaujah—the $3 suggested donation is a way more affordable way to catch this dude than $80 Broadway tickets.
