Enrico Pieranunzi

It's a matter of balance for the Italian pianist—while leading trios, he lets everyone have their say. So his drummers nudge things in and out of time, and his bassists dance between the beats. On top of them, Pieranunzi waxes pointed or reflective, jittery or poised. With this kind of wide perspective, it's no wonder he's become a crowd-pleaser. A bit romantic, a smidge radical—expect a summation of modern piano approaches when he makes a somewhat rare appearance with a Paul Motian and Marc Johnson rhythm section at this famed cellar.
