“I like breaking all the rules,” the gutsy feminist filmmaker Sally Potter recently told The Huffington Post. Indeed, Potter, who is best known for her bold Oscar-nominated adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s Orlando in 1992, has made her reputation on writing and directing films too risky for Hollywood (perhaps you cinephiles saw last year’s Rage, which made its premiere on cell-phone screens and starred Jude Law as a gorgeous transvestite). Now MOMA takes a look back at the gems from her 40-year career, including a program of her short experiments from the late ’60s and ’70s. Tonight, catch the U.S. premiere of the digital version of Orlando, followed by a conversation with Potter and the film’s lovely star, Tilda Swinton.
