Natalie Merchant

The former 10,000 Maniacs singer's solo debut Tigerlily made her the second-biggest female songwriter of 1995 alt-rock radio (the other one rhymes with "Gowanus"). Her latest, Leave Your Sleep, is adapted poetry set to music which at times makes the heinous mistake of trying to ram through a diverse assortment of loosely folk-affiliated styles that nobody in their right mind would ever put on a Natalie Merchant record—think Chinese string instruments, jazz horns, and even reggae backbeats. Bitter aftertastes aside, though, the more straightforward folk-rock portions work well enough, and older songs such as "Wonder" and "Break Your Heart" do exactly as they promise.
