Wavves front man Nathan Williams tweets way too much about weed to ever be considered “straightened out,” but after a year of Black Lips brawls and a disastrous performance at the Barcelona Primavera Festival, he’s in a better place, having ditched his previous aesthetic of crunchy lo-fi for soulful punk on this year’s sublime King Of The Beach. Live he’s as spaced out as ever, aided and abetted by the former rhythm section of the Jay Reatard band, yet tracks like “Green Eyes” and “Post Acid“ are like discovering that the class burnout can write a song just as good as Dylan.
