A WRITER'S CONUNDRUM

When life throws you lemons . . .

When the dean of my university said "this is the worst time to be a journalist" during his commencement speech almost a decade ago, we can't imagine what graduating students are being told today. The Writer's Recession Survival Guide, a panel about how to basically survive life as a writer, certainly feels long overdue. In this interactive panel, members from the Crucial Minutiae writers group will discuss how to make ends meet and cope emotionally, and how to get by with other jobs that require your writing skills, such as speaking gigs, ghostwriting and consulting, test prep, and teaching in schools and for independent organizations such as Mediabistro and Gotham Writers' Workshop. They'll also answer your questions on insurance and tax prep. Panelists include memoirist and writing teacher/coach Kimberlee Auerbach; author and educational consultant Joie Jager-Hyman; New York magazine contributor and LSAT tutor Alex Morris; author, television producer, and editor Kate Torgovnick; and author, ghostwriter, consultant, and blogger Courtney E. Martin.
