READING THE WATER

Take a kayak on the East River

Brooklyn Bridge Park offers ongoing activities for adults and kids, ranging from free movie nights to—believe it or not—kayaking in the East River. The cove between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges is not only a haven for fish, crabs, and birds, it also offers access to the water. For six weekends in August and September, local boathouses and boating groups are sponsoring kayaking and community rowing for free! (Kayaking and canoeing are in the protected Cove, and rowing is with a group under the supervision of an experienced guide.) This is first-come, first-served, so arrive early and wear clothes and shoes you can get wet in. All equipment is provided, and no training is required. Two rules: You must know how to swim, and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult guardian. And, don't forget, you can't beat the view.
