Steve Earle

Modern country-folk's crown jewel proudly bears the furious twang of a West Virginian porch-swing flatpicker, but he displays more than double the stereotypical IQ. You'd be hard-pressed to find another place where tales about whiskey-soaked coal miners sit so comfortably next to staggeringly personal reflections on God, twisted love songs about heroin, and poker game narratives with anthropomorphic cards. His 2007 album Washington Square Serenade was an enthusiastic tribute to New York City, so the least you could do here is return the favor, especially if you still think of him primarily as the "Copperhead Road" guy. With Allison Moorer.
