When Neal Medlyn heard that Miley Cyrus didn't know any Jay-Z songs because she only listens to sad indie music, he was inspired. Already working on a show about Cyrus and her alter ego, Hannah Montana, Brave New Girl, the pop-obsessed performance artist created a playlist, mysteriously named "The Big C," of exactly the kind of mopey music he suspected Miley had on her iPod. Since the songs ultimately influenced the script for the show, which premieres in late September at the Chocolate Factory, Medlyn got Kenny Mellman on board to help share them—a little Nina Simone, Kelly Clarkson, Sleater-Kinney, and Bon Iver. Interspersed between the emo will be selections from Cyrus's 75 pages of Tweets. "I wanted to do an endurance performance of them all in a Chuck E. Cheese," said Medlyn, "but I think, instead, I'm going to speak them to the fine attendees of the Big C!" Lucky us!
