Man in the Dark
Dir. Lew Landers (1953). One of the first classic 3D films, Man in the Dark is also one of the most classical. This tough little amnesia-noir, rushed out ahead of the much-hyped Mystery of the Wax Museum, makes the most out the least. Depth of field is enhanced by the shadowy black-and-white and compact frame—a shabby bar seems monumental, a row of shop-window reflections turn a street into a perceptual funhouse, and the roller coaster climax is enhanced through the use of flat process shots.
