Maps & Atlases

A Chicago combo that's been making the scene quite nicely with their debut full-length, Perch Patchwork, Maps & Atlases bend that ampersand in enough intriguing ways to outrun whatever Latest Indie Darling tag you'd like to try to apply. Sure, there are bouts of lilting percussion, the guitar lines dance elliptically, and Dave Davison has one of those grabby voices that sounds like he has an internal throat beard. But the songs are what matters here, not their representative components, and Maps have happily provided with range, tact, and some really nice meanders that you just don't see coming. Plus, Davison's voice keeps putting "Sunday Shining" from Finley Quaye in my head. That song was awesome. With Cults, Laura Stevenson & the Cans
