Benny and Josh Safdie are a couple of young filmmaker brothers (yes, more of those) on the rise. Their feature debut The Pleasure of Being Robbed, which follows a female kleptomaniac on the Lower East Side, was the closing-night film (and the only American film) at the 2008 Cannes Directors' Fortnight, a series that launched the careers of such notable names as Spike Lee and Sofia Coppola. Over the next week, the brothers are curating their own series at BAM, Emotional Sloppy Manic Cinema, which includes their films as well as the movies that most inspire them. Today at 4:30, they introduce Ulu Grosbard's 1978 film Straight Time, starring Dustin Hoffman as an ex-con struggling to stay clean on parole. Also screening today (at 2 and 7) is Robert Bresson's A Man Escaped, a 1956 French drama about a member of the French Resistance captured by the Nazis and his elaborate plan to escape. 'Straight Time' at 4:30 and 9:15, 'A Man Escaped' at 2 and 7
Sun., Aug. 15, 2, 4:30, 7 & 9:15 p.m., 2010
