If you’ve yet to check out the Otto Dix exhibition at Neue Galerie, this is the final week to do so. The first solo exhibition ever held in the United States of this major German artist features more than 100 masterpieces divided into four themes: his experiences as a soldier in World War I, portraiture, sexuality, and religious and allegorical paintings. Wounded several times as a machine gunner in WWI, Dix, who died in 1969, is known for his grotesque battlefield scenes depicting the brutal atrocities of war. But he is perhaps most famous for capturing the eccentric performers, criminals, and sex workers who emerged during the Weimar years, such as his 1925 Portrait of the Dancer Anita Berber, the famous bisexual cabaret dancer and prostitute. Catch it now before the show moves on to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
